Minimates Control Art & Toy Design
Art Direction, Graphic Design, Illustration, Production
I worked with Art Asylum as a designer creating control art for the Minimates action figure line, contributing to the development of highly articulated, block-styled collectible figures produced at scale. The role required translating character designs into precise, production-ready documentation that could be used directly by sculptors and manufacturers.
My work focused on creating detailed control art, including multi-view turnarounds for newly tooled parts, Pantone color specifications, and surface artwork applied directly to the figures. I contributed designs across a wide range of licensed properties, including Battlestar Galactica, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Marvel Studios, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Rocky, and others, each requiring adaptation to the Minimates system while maintaining character recognition and consistency.
One notable contribution involved developing a non-humanoid figure for the character Daggit from Battlestar Galactica, expanding the Minimates format beyond its standard bipedal structure. This approach later informed additional four-legged and non-standard characters across other licensed lines. The projects shown reflect a deep engagement with form, color, and production constraints, applying illustration and design thinking within a highly technical, physical product context.
